You have to have the right gauge wire and have the rating of the extension cord be correct for your Dryer. I bought one that has the proper rating and has run trouble free, got it at Hdepot. a thin wire will burn up and meltdown, so make sure you match the gauge. 6 is too light at any length for a large machine. 12 gauge short and if long I would go 10 gauge.

As a Fire Investigator, I would be VERY careful about using an extension cord for ANY appliance. Appliances should only be plugged directly into a wall outlet. If you ARE going to use an extension cord, make sure it is at least 12 gauge, is only as long as necessary to reach the outlet, is never coiled or covered up (this may cause it to overheat causing arcing) . and NEVER plug the cord into a power-strip.
